I love this time of year! The Ashe home has been decked out in Christmas flair since Thanksgiving weekend and the Holiday turned into a month-long affair. We kicked the festivities off with the Sylva Christmas Parade. Eli met Santa Claus for the first time and … Continue reading
Eli was unsure when I asked him to stick his little hand inside the pumpkins. He said “umkins?”. I said “Yes help mommy”. He quickly warmed up to the idea and took over. Hmmm, I wonder who he gets that from? Fall is definitely in the air and is quite colder then I like but we are making the best of it.
Since Fall is pushing Summer out of the way, we decided one last beach trip was in order. We packed our beach gear and headed to Myrtle. My in-laws were already down there celebrating their wedding anniversary and Avery’s great check-up with his Doctors at Duke. It was a fast and furious trip but super duper fun. Our boy loves the beach….see for yourselves!

We met this sweet little girl when she was 10 months old. I am so thankful that my cousin moved here with her three kids 6 years ago because I have been able to watch them grow. We celebrated Cheli’s birthday this past Sunday. We have not spoiled Cheli like we used to and we needed to remedy the situation. We all had so much fun watching her in full Princess mode!
For months there had been talk about heading to the beach; of course Charleston is always a possibility for us but we wanted to go somewhere different and work in a visit with the McCall’s. As my friends know uncertainty is not my friend yet uncertainty was plaguing our vacation. All our planning hung in the balance when Travis found out he was interviewing for a BIG promotion. Great news but vacation could be postponed and we couldn’t make reservations until we knew. I can happily report that Travis got the job and was given the okay to vacation as planned. We booked a room in Morehead City, NC.
Once the car was packed with what seemed like the entire house we said “see you later Sylva”. Our road trip was surprisingly enjoyable until we arrived at our destination and our room was not ready. Eli was more than ready to be done with his car seat so we decided to walk around and noticed that our oceanfront room did not have beach access. After debating what to do, we strapped Eli back in his seat and set out to find a true Oceanfront room. I quickly realized why we have never vacationed on the Coast of NC. There is water EVERYWHERE, granted I know it’s the beach but we were surrounded by water! Large bodies of water make me a little queasy and uneasy (thanks to a bad bad dream I had once). After what seemed like rows and rows of private condos we found The Clam Digger Resort. The Digger is an old resort but it has wonderful charm and we LOVED it! It was quiet and very family friendly.
On a rainy day we took Little Man to the Aquarium where Eli ran around pointing and “oh wowing” at the different tanks. After beach bumming around Atlantic Beach, Morehead City, and Emerald Isle we packed our bags and headed North. We stopped in New Bern, a precious little town that is the home of Pepsi Cola and a local staple called Moore’s BBQ, which happens to hold the World Record for biggest BBQ sandwich ever! Moore’s introduced me to vinegar based BBQ sauce and I can report that as far as I am concerned there is no longer any other kind of BBQ sauce.
We continued to Chocowinity, NC where the McCall’s reside. We usually visit with them once a year so spending a few days with them was a wonderful treat. They took us out on their boat and showed us around Washington, NC. We even worked in a trip to Cape Hatteras where Eli and I admired our very first Lighthouse. With the help of urbanspoon.com we found a delicious divey restaurant where all of us enjoyed the last dinner of our trip. Despite a little anxiety the Outer Banks get two thumbs up! The trip home was long but we had plenty of stories and laughs from the week to keep us entertained (Eli fake laughs when we laugh, it’s adorable). Here are a few pictures. *Thanks Jason & Sarah for a great time, see you in December.
The 4th of July isn’t my favorite holiday. I love America don’t get me wrong! I am equally proud of the American culture as I am the Mexican culture. This year, I enjoyed having a day off in the middle of the week and taking Eli to Deep Creek with his cousins. I have many fond memories as a kid loading up with my family, heading to “A” Mountain and anticipating the beautiful fireworks show. The 4th was also my Tita’s (my mom’s mom) birthday. Sometimes she would be visiting us from Mexico, she loved seeing the sky light up. When I was 14 years old she passed away on her birthday, the meaning of the day remains but it is clouded by all the memories I have of her and that dreadful day. She was an amazing woman, I loved her so much. My brother and I spent alot of time with her as kids, either at her house in Mexico or our house in Tucson. As she aged; our roles reversed some, I would help her shower and braid her long fine salt/pepper hair into a bun. Walking into her house has never been the same and neither has this holiday. I didn’t celebrate the day until I met Travis. We would spend the day with friends and then watched as the sky lit up. Now that we have Eli I want him to have lots of happy fun 4th of July memories!
We celebrated Travis’s birthday Mexico style….sort of. The main course consisted of delicious carñitas tacos on homemade corn tortillas and an impressive salsa selection. For dessert, Dairy Queen ice cream cake, an Ashe tradition!
Celebramos el cumpleaños de Travis estilo Méxicano…. mas o menos. El plato principal consistió de tacos de carñitas en tortillas de maíz y una selección de salsa impresionante. ¡Para el postre, pastel helado, una tradición de Ashe!
The rain threatened to ruin our outdoor fun day with the Roland’s. Luckily, the Roland’s and Ashe’s are known for their good time capabilities! Growing up we have lots of friends, or so we think we do. As an adult I feel as I can count my friends on one hand, I mean there are many acquaintances along the way but real friends are far and few. The Roland’s are a perfect example of real friends; we go weeks without seeing each other, then we get together and it’s as if we hung out daily. It’s always good to see them, to swap stories and just simply watch our babies together. Here are a few pictures from our playdate.
