The Ashe’s Vacation

For months there had been talk about heading to the beach; of course Charleston is always a possibility for us but we wanted to go somewhere different and work in a visit with the McCall’s. As my friends know uncertainty is not my friend yet uncertainty was plaguing our vacation.  All our planning hung in the balance when Travis found out he was interviewing for a BIG promotion.  Great news but vacation could be postponed and we couldn’t make reservations until we knew.  I can happily report that Travis got the job and was given the okay to vacation as planned. We booked a room in Morehead City, NC.

Once the car was packed with what seemed like the entire house we said “see you later Sylva”.  Our road trip was surprisingly enjoyable until we arrived at our destination and our room was not ready.  Eli was more than ready to be done with his car seat so we decided to walk around and noticed that our oceanfront room did not have beach access.  After debating what to do, we strapped Eli back in his seat and set out to find a true Oceanfront room.   I quickly realized why we have never vacationed on the Coast of NC.  There is water EVERYWHERE, granted I know it’s the beach but we were surrounded by water!  Large bodies of water make me a little queasy and uneasy (thanks to a bad bad dream I had once).  After what seemed like rows and rows of private condos we found The Clam Digger Resort.  The Digger is an old resort but it has wonderful charm and we LOVED it!  It was quiet and very family friendly.

On a rainy day we took Little Man to the Aquarium where Eli ran around pointing and “oh wowing” at the different tanks.  After beach bumming around Atlantic Beach, Morehead City, and Emerald Isle we packed our bags and headed North. We stopped in New Bern, a precious little town that is the home of Pepsi Cola and a local staple called Moore’s BBQ, which happens to hold the World Record for biggest BBQ sandwich ever!  Moore’s introduced me to vinegar based BBQ sauce and I can report that as far as I am concerned there is no longer any other kind of BBQ sauce.

We continued to Chocowinity, NC where the McCall’s reside.  We usually visit with them once a year so spending a few days with them was a wonderful treat.  They took us out on their boat and showed us around Washington, NC.  We even worked in a trip to Cape Hatteras where Eli and I admired our very first Lighthouse.  With the help of urbanspoon.com we found a delicious divey restaurant where all of us enjoyed the last dinner of our trip.  Despite a little anxiety the Outer Banks get two thumbs up!  The trip home was long but we had plenty of stories and laughs from the week to keep us entertained (Eli fake laughs when we laugh, it’s adorable).  Here are a few pictures.  *Thanks Jason & Sarah for a great time, see you in December.
